It gives us great pleasure to introduce and welcome you to one of the UK’s finest Coarse and Match Anglers, Mr Andy “probably the nicest bloke in fishing” May, welcome Andy!
Andy probably needs no introduction to most, but for anglers from other areas of the sport, he’s one of the Nation’s top match anglers with a well earned reputation as Coach of The Year (as voted by the readers of Pole Fishing Magazine). Anyone that’s had the privilege of meeting Andy “Ooosh” May will know just how down-to-earth, funny and technically brilliant he is. We had the pleasure of filming with Andy last year for the new Fishery 2015 series, and these episodes see Andy talking about two of his favourite fisheries in Cheshire and Staffordshire (they’ll be going live very soon). With lots more to come from the main man himself, we thought we’d ask Andy to give you more of a lo-down …
How did you first get into Fishing?
“I first started fishing when I was 3 years old. My Dad got me into it and I just love the sport. I’m a full time professional angler and coach based at Partridge Lakes and Cudmore Fisheries, and have two fantastic sponsors in MAP and Bait-Tech. I’ve won numerous competitions over the years, but probably my best angling achievement was winning the Kamasan Matchman of the Year 3 times in succession from 2000 to 2003”.
“To list some of my other achievements, as a youth with long flowing strawberry blonde hair, I also represented England twice fishing in the under 19s set-up. We fished in Portugal in 1996 and Croatia in 1997. I was individual World Silver Medallist in Portugal, and as a team, England came 3rd. I was Runner Up in the 2001 John Smiths Angling event held on the Warwickshire Avon. I came Runner Up to a bloke called Steve Ringer in the 2008 Dynamite Baits Festival at Whiteacres! I’ve won the ACA Masters on the Glebe Fishery and the Angling Trust Masters held at Barford Lakes. I’ve qualified twice for the Fish ‘O’ Mania Final, and had 6 2nds in qualifiers over the years, where you need to win to qualify! I’ve also qualified for the Maver Match this Final, I actually came Runner Up in the Runners Up Final the first year it was held, hmmm, I’m always the bridesmaid!”.
Andy’s Favourite Style of Fishing
“My favourite style of fishing is rod and line fishing, in particular stick float or waggler fishing, it just takes me right back to my childhood before poles were really popular. My favourite fish is the chub, because like me, they are greedy and will eat anything, except beetroot! My ambitions for the future are to keep my coaching business (see end for details) growing and win one of the big events like Fish ‘O’ Mania or Maver Match, or maybe even both of them and a Parkdean Masters title as well, oh and a River Fest, I’m not greedy!”.
Thanks Andy, we’ll no doubt see plenty more records coming his way, and we’re looking forward to hearing more from Andy in his upcoming articles here on Fishery.co.uk. Keep an eye out for Andy’s upcoming debut on Fishery 2015.
