Fish’O’Mania 2016 Champion Andy May

Our new columnist and expert coarse and match angling man, Andy May, has only gone and scooped the big one, the XXIII Fish’O’Mania 2016 at the excellent Cudmore Fisheries!

Congratulations Andy.

In a short interview published by Andy’s sponsors, MAP, Andy had this to say:

“I’ve tried so hard to win this title, my dreams have come true. The money is obviously excellent, but to me it was just getting my name on the trophy (and the bottle of champagne!)”

Andy bags a whopping £50,000 prize along with one of angling’s most coveted titles. His third attempt, Andy dug deep and had to fight hard in torrential conditions against an early lead from Kerry Kirkwood who led the first two half hourly weigh-ins.

Andy took the lead from the third weigh in, dropping back to Ross Harold from Essex half way until he pulled through to the front during the last 90 minutes with 27.15kg. Supported by “Bagger” Andy Bennett, Andy paid tribute to his unwavering support in the campaign and finally to his family for all their support throughout the years.

Andy’s Tactics

Andy fished 6 metres using little tiny balls of ground bait with a few chopped worms in.

” I fished a worms head or a worms tail on a hook, 4 x 14 float, a bulk and 3 droppers, 014 line, 16’s hook, so fishing quite positive really. I’ve only had two bonus fish, I’ve had a tench, probably 2lb, and a skimmer probably a pound and a half, and all the rest are tiny F1’s, little tench, lots of little barbel, best fish in the world: chub and a few ides. Special thanks to the bagger Andy Bennett, he’s kept me cool. I can finally say, ‘We’ve won it ‘aven’t we! Oooosh!'”

You certainly have!

We’ll be hearing from Andy very soon in his next instalment!
